When We get Killed by the Cops
Our history did not begin in chains,
Yet that insanity is etched in our brains,
Despite our gains,
For every brother and sister that made it,
Thousands suffer in vain,
Old man told me only death will remove that stain,
This country was not designed to hear from us,
So, my whisper is too loud,
But as long as I have air in my lungs
I’ll be Black and Proud,
When we get killed by the cops
There is always a debate,
You say they were just following procedure,
That It isn’t hate,
But I spotted the racism at the starting gate,
You discuss our fate over the dinner plate,
A life sentence or a death sentence
Because of my color,
The pain that causes a Black mother
To kill her own child
Rather than watch him or her suffer
Through a life of slavery,
Yeah, that was back in the day,
But cops are still shooting me in the back 7 times,
And calling that bravery,
This is the anti-hate rhetoric
That the comfortable can’t stand,
Because being equal
Was never really a part of the plan,
When we are shot by the cops
Our humanity is picked apart,
Still regarded as an inferior race in these parts,
The right ensures certain laws
That don’t help our cause get a restart,
This is what not voting,
And inaction look like,
When the courts legally strip away your human rights,
But you were too busy watching two niggas fight
Over a chicken sandwich to notice…
