I Used to Do This for Fun (2019)

I Used to Do This For Fun_short version.jpg

I swear, I would’ve been a savage

If it wasn’t for that Black Girl Magic,

Having to explain to God my boundless passions,

In-out, in-out skin bouts of madness,

Still don’t know what I was searching for,

But as fate would have it,

She found me,

And I found peace,

I haven’t been broke for a couple of decades at least,

Back then I wasn’t paying attention,

Honey was trying to teach me how to play spades

With her feet,

Got high off of those hip-hop beats,

Inspired me to feast on my own heroic feats,

Instead of matching wits with freaks,

I chose poetry as my release,

Back in the late 90’s they couldn’t grasp

That the Sultan was a masterpiece (still can’t),

I taught the aliens a fly style of speak,

Old school like 84’

When they were beatboxing in the streets,

Graffiti tattooed in my speech,

While they were gangbanging,

And running from the police,

I was just trying to be free,

Trying to find me,

I wanted to be away from the chaos,

I swear my time machine was one planet

And 1,000 years off,

Feeling out of place,

Until desire was all up in my face,

Wanted me to eat her,

But I had yet to truly meet or properly greet her,

She blamed my handsome features,

I gave Blacks confidence

When they were treating us like hideous creatures,

Now they are free-styling on urban street knowledge,

Courses in college on how dope we are,

What we’ve overcome just to be noticed,

Earthly things kill me,

Like making a popstar out of a rodent,

Fantasies had me elsewhere,

Where they could appreciate something

So potent from a poet,

God had other ideas,

Skill wise, I’ve always had no peer,

Whether the Don was loosening brassieres

From atmosphere to atmosphere,

Or the Sultan conquered vast landscapes at will,

I’ve never seen so many men so broken,

My dominance was all out in the open,

I was banished to earth,

Just for scoping,

I snuck a peak of perfection disrobing,

Nearly died on the spot,

Into tales with intricate plots,

But occasionally mindless mayhem will do,

Brother told me, “You’re nobody till somebody kills you,”

I called bullshit back then, and still do…
